Nick Kyrgios admits tennis career "may be over"

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is seriously considering retirement as he revealed that he is "at a crossroads" in his career.

In a column written for The Sydney Morning Herald, the 28-year-old said that despite his desire to compete at the highest level, he might never make it back to playing professional tennis.

He also said that he has enjoyed being away from the courts doing the media rounds.

"I sat down with my agent, Stuart Duguid, a couple of days ago to talk about my future," he wrote.

"The reality is, there is a part of me that knows my time in the sport may be over. And I'm OK with that.

"It's a conversation that needed to be had. I'm at a crossroads in my career and have reached a point where life after tennis is a prospect that excites me."

He also added that despite knowing he can still compete for titles, his body is letting him down, as he continues to recover from his knee injury in January 2023.

"I sit there and watch some of the players on tour and know within myself that this generation is not as strong as some of the players I have gone up against," he wrote.

"I know I can be one of the best in the world and win major tournaments -- if my body lets me. The fire still burns, but it's not my everything."

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist also confirmed that he won't be making himself available for this year's Paris Olympics, saying that the treatment he got from the Australian Olympic Committee in the lead-up to the 2016 Rio Games was one of the key factors.

"I was No. 13 at the time and had a genuine chance at winning a medal. For them to forbid me from representing my country for behavioural reasons is something that I just can't forget," he said.

He added that his "mentality has changed", and despite still having the desire to play for his country, his decision is final.

Kyrgios has barely been on court after withdrawing from last year's Australian Open, but he has been commentating on the tournament for Eurosport, adding that his future may be in the box, rather than on the court.

Image: Getty

Nick Kyrgios' honest thoughts on Shane Warne's open letter

In 2015, late cricket legend Shane Warne posted an open letter Nick Kyrgios on social media, calling out the then hot-headed tennis player's fiery behaviour off-court.

"Dear Nick, we all realise you're only 20 and have a lot to learn buddy, but please don't waste your talent," the letter began.

"Everyone in the world, especially us Australians want to respect you. You need to respect the game of tennis and yourself. We all make mistakes.

"You're testing our patience mate, show us what you're made of and how hungry you are to be the best in the world. It's time to step up and start winning, no excuses," he added in the scathing letter.

"We all make mistakes. It's how we learn from them and the way we conduct ourselves when we lose that shows true character. You're testing our patience mate," he concluded.

A then 20-year-old Kyrgios had just beat Spanish champion Rafael Nadal during the 2015 Wimbledon, but also attracted a lot of controversy after insulting Stan Wawrinka at a tournament in Montreal, Canada.

This was a particularly difficult time in Kyrgios' career, as he was suspended for 28-days and got a $34,705 fine from the ATP.

Since the incident, Kyrgios has managed to get his professional life back on track, and in a recent interview with Piers Morgan on his show Uncensored, the tennis star shared that he never read the letter.

"I saw it and didn't read it. I'm never going to be the first one to go out on social media and put someone down," he told the host.

He added that he believed that Warne would be proud of how far he's come.

"I look back at that letter and at how far I've come and I'd say he would be proud for sure. I’ve had a pretty successful career. I feel I've won a lot more than I've lost."

Images: Getty

Stevie Nicks faces wild backlash over Hawaii fires post

Stevie Nicks, the celebrated icon from Fleetwood Mac, has drawn a mixed response among her admirers due to her extensive reflection on the Maui fires, with even her most devoted supporters not hesitating to express their concerns.

The legendary artist took to social media to convey her thoughts regarding the tragic Maui fires, a subject close to her heart. However, her detailed account of how the catastrophe impacted her, particularly in relation to her niece's disrupted holiday plans, has drawn a divisive reaction.

In a post entitled "“Lahaina is not gone ~ It is just away,” Nicks opened up about her personal connection to the coastal town that fell victim to the destructive fires, claiming the lives of at least 96 individuals.

“As I am sure you have heard – the island, Maui, where I own a house I have been staying at since the 80s – and the small village, city, most magical place on earth, Lahaina, burned to the ground over the last few days,” she wrote.

She further explained the distressing situation involving her young niece, her spouse, and their child, who had just embarked on a much-needed vacation before the niece's return to her studies in psychology. Regrettably, their vacation was cut short due to the onset of the fire.

Nicks also delved into the profound connection that the members of Fleetwood Mac share with Maui. “This island, in so many ways, defines Fleetwood Mac and me and our families. My truth was that I wanted a house here just so I could spend time in Lahaina walking the streets; visiting the art galleries – sitting on the rock wall – Most all the opals I wear on my fingers came from a store on Front Street. I hope the sweet lady who owned that store was able to grab all her opals and run. I hope she made it out.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stevie Nicks (@stevienicks)

The response among her fan base has been polarised. Some voiced disappointment with Nicks for placing emphasis on her niece's disrupted vacation rather than the tragic loss of nearly 100 lives in the fires. They also questioned the absence of any links or information directing her substantial Instagram following, which numbers 1.4 million, towards aiding the fire survivors.

One Instagram user commented, “I’ve been a Stevie fan forever and a day but this is Completely tone deaf! There are people who have LOST THEIR HOMES, their livelihood and their loved ones. Regular people – not rich, and not tourists. “Ruining” someone’s well deserved holiday is the absolutely LEAST of it all. True colours are shining and it’s such a disappointment.”

While detractors were vocal, others stood up for Nicks, contending that her personal connection to the island warranted her sharing her story just as much as anyone else – with one post in particular offering a particularly insightful explanation:

"People commenting with criticism: I sincerely understand but what you don’t realize is that this is a woman who doesn’t go on the internet or understand how any of that works. She hand writes these notes to express her heart and has an assistant post them. She has always given back without advertising it. The concept of crowdfunding donations on social media is something she really just has no idea about. If she knew better, I could understand the frustration but she’s just not a part of social media discourse whatsoever. I can guarantee that she is not only giving back but reaching directly out to individuals she has crossed paths with there over the years. Stevie has always been charitable, but has never been a citizen of the internet."

Images: Instagram

Nick Kyrgios' girlfriend speaks for the first time on engagement rumours

Nick Kyrgios’ girlfriend Costeen Hatzi has given her first TV interview, appearing on Channel 7’s The Morning Show, where she shared how she first the Aussie tennis star, and discussed a potential future engagement.

Hatzi, 22, revealed that the pair's first encounter was less than conventional, linking back to a mirror she had advertised for sale online.

“I used to have an online home decor business and I would sell mirrors and candles and vases,” she told The Morning Show.

“I took a photo - like a mirror selfie - and I posted it to my business Instagram.”

She explained that the photo had appeared on Kyrgios’ explore page on Instagram, which led him to track her down and meet her.

“So he clicked on it and then messaged the business and was like, ‘Hey, can I buy this mirror?’”

Hatzi said despite Kyrgios living in Melbourne, he was quick to offer to collect the mirror from Sydney in person.

“He came to Sydney, he invited me out that night, so I went with a few friends,” she said.

The business owner admitted she chose to bring friends along with her in case it went “badly”.

“But, everything went well, it was so friendly, it was so nice - I didn’t really expect him to be so friendly and nice.”

She went on to say that although she didn’t follow tennis at the time, she was aware of his “on-court behaviour and stuff” so she “was a bit skeptical”.

“But we met up and then we spent every day with each other after that,” she said.

Hatzi said her family was “a bit confused” when she shared she was going out for drinks with the tennis star.

“I told my mum that he was picking up the mirror and she was like, ‘Oh does he just want the mirror or does he want to take you out?’” she said.

It has been 18 months since the couple first met and they now live together and travel the world for Kyrgios’ many tennis commitments.

“I can work while I’m travelling,” Hatzi said, explaining that focusing on her work and travelling combines well.

“So I can film all my Instagram content on the road.

“That kind of works well. We travelled together on tour last year and we’re going again this year.”

Hatzi has her own exciting new venture as she is now a new face of Bondi Sands, which Kyrgios teased on social media could lead to his “early retirement”.

“He’s really supportive, I’m really lucky to have him,” she said.

Hatzi also touched on her boyfriend’s previous comments that she is “the one”.

In February 2022, Kyrgios was asked by a fan if he knew Hatzi was the one when he first saw her, which he responded with “yes”.

She smiled at the comment but revealed that the pair were not planning their engagement “yet”.

“I mean, if it happens, it happens, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” she said.

“I’m just going with the flow and we’re happy and healthy and, yeah, that’s all that matters.”

Nick Kyrgios’ assault charge dismissed after guilty plea

World no. 20 tennis player Nick Kyrgios faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday and dodged a conviction despite a guilty plea.

Nick issued a guilty plea to common assault during an argument with his ex-girlfriend, Chiara Passari, over two years ago in 2021.

Initially, he and his lawyers argued that the charge should be dropped due to his mental health. This was withdrawn when it was revealed to the court that he was not suffering from a “significant depressive illness” at the time.

As Nick’s lawyer - Michael Kukulies-Smith - put it, there was "a relationship between the mental health and the offending - even though he no longer suffers it to the same extent today."

It was then that Nick pleaded guilty to the charge of common assault.

Although Magistrate Beth Campbell rejected the dismissal on mental health grounds, she ultimately dismissed the case, believing that a conviction was not warranted.

The court was informed that Magistrate Campbell would be dealing with Nick’s case in the same manner that she would approach that of any other individual with the same charges, and that Nick’s status as a notable Australian figure would not come into play.

“I am dealing with you in the same way I would deal with any young man in this court,” she said, “you are a young man who happens to hit a tennis ball particularly well."

Although Magistrate Campbell agreed that Chiara Passari was clearly distressed over the 2021 assault, she went on to say that it appeared to be an isolated incident, and an “impulsive and unfortunate response” on Nick’s part. She noted that he was a “young man trying to extricate himself from a heightened emotional situation.”

Michael Kukulies-Smith requested that a conviction not be recorded as Nick had been quick to display remorse for what he had done. Magistrate Beth Campbell went on to dismiss the charge later in the hearing, allowing that no conviction would be recorded.

Nick issued a brief statement to reporters on his way out of the court, thanking the court and confessing that he was “sincerely sorry”.

“I was not in a good place when this took place,” he said, “and I reacted to a difficult situation in a way I deeply regret.

“Mental health is tough. Life can seem overwhelming. But I’ve found that getting help and working on myself has helped me to feel better and to be better.”

Images: Getty

He aims to recover in time to be back on the court for the Indian Wells Masters in March.

“I’m devastated, obviously. It’s my home tournament, I’ve had some great memories here,” he said, “Obviously, last year winning the title in doubles and playing the best tennis of my life probably.

“Then going into this event as one of the favourites, it’s brutal. To Nick’s credit he did try everything - to the point even last week he was having a procedure called fenestration and drainage where they use a syringe to try and drain the cyst.”

Maher went on to stress that withdrawing was the right decision for Kyrgios and his future in tennis, and gave fans of the tennis star hope that they’d soon see him take the courts again.

“I think we made the sensible decision to withdraw him because at this stage he wants to feel mentally comfortable that he can go seven matches, he can go the distance,” Maher stated, “we wanted to prevent him from causing further injury or making that injury worse …

“It won’t interrupt his year tremendously despite the fact that it’s a great disappointment to withdraw from the Australian Open home Slam. The prognosis is good, he’ll be fine and we’ll just go back to work and make sure everything’s fine for him and we go again.”

Image: Getty Images

Nick Kyrgios blasts Ash Barty’s historic win

Nick Kyrgios has hit back at Ash Barty’s historic win of the Newcombe Medal for a record fifth time in a row.

The 26-year-old retired tennis player won the Newcombe Medal at the Australian Tennis Awards for her Australian Open success.

This, however, did not appear to sit right with fellow Aussie Kyrgios, who said she did not deserve the medal after having only played the Australian Open this year.

In an Instagram story, Kyrgios shared a photo with Barty and his achievements in the past year, clearly showing he achieved more.

He had the caption: "LOL. No respect at all. I don't give a f***."

The graphic showed that Barty had played only three months of 2022 in which she won two singles titles and one doubles crown, including 14 matches across the two formats.

Kyrgios on the other hand had one singles title and three doubles crowns, as well as 61 victories across the two disciplines.

Despite the huge difference in numbers, it would appear that Kyrgios played better than Barty but that is not the case.

Barty won a singles grand slam and Kyrgios simply did not after losing the Wimbledon singles decider to Novak Djokovic while Barty defeated Danielle Collins.

Images: Instagram

Dissecting Stevie Wonder’s Superstition, 50 years after we first heard its infectious grooves

On October 24 1972, Stevie Wonder released his 15th album Talking Book and the world heard the infectious grooves and seamless vocal delivery of the song Superstition for the very first time.

Superstition reached number one in the Billboard Hot 100 and on the soul singles chart.

The song has been covered by an astounding number of artists, from Mel Tormeto Stevie Ray Vaughan and Macy Gray, French musician Tété and a unique mashup from Pomplamoose.

Superstition is frequently played at gigs and gatherings all over the globe because the bass riff and driving drum groove have so much dance appeal – a mix of the unexpected syncopation and repetition of the chorus hook. The song feels alive.

A simple structure

The listener can’t help but respond directly to the infectious opening groove played by Wonder.

Three key instruments forge the captivating and carefully arranged funk groove in the introduction: the Hohner Clavinet (an electronic harpsichord – more on this later), drums and the Moog bass. The cohesion is musical magic.

Superstition’s recording engineer Malcolm Cecil recalled how Wonder recorded the entire song on drums first, with no reference other than the song in his head, then the keyboard bass part, and then the Clavinet.

This illustrates how complete his conceptualisation of the song was prior to recording.

The song’s structure is simple. The introduction sets up the familiar groove with its static harmony, pulsing bass and keyboard riff.

The verse proceeds over the same static harmony, with a new bass riff introduced halfway through, effecting a shift to a higher dynamic level.

The chorus releases the tension with a sophisticated cadence, reflecting jazz sensibilities and revealing the breadth of Wonder’s musical knowledge.

This structure is repeated, followed by an instrumental version of the chorus. Then there’s a final verse and chorus before a long instrumental section built on the verse riff leads to the final fade out.

Unexpected instruments

One of the most memorable parts of the song is the signature played on the Hohner Clavinet.

A Clavinet looks like an electric keyboard, but it is an electro-mechanical string instrument originally developed for the performance of classical harpsichord and clavichord music.

Like the Hammond organ of the 1930s, it was soon discovered and adopted by many contemporary musicians.

Wonder had already used the instrument on I Was Made to Love Her (1967), Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day (1968) and I Don’t Know Why (1969). According to music journalist Martin Horn, Wonder wanted to use the Clavinet on Superstition to “full effect” to “show off”. Wonder had described the instrument as “funky, dirty, stinky”.

In some ways, the Clavinet is doing the job a guitarist might normally do. It plays the single note riff at the core of Wonder’s song, and chord parts similar to what you would hear from a strummed guitar. But there are also several other barely audible tracks of clavinet, which subtly add to the texture.

Superstition’s bass line is played on an analog synthesiser called TONTO (The Original New Timbral Orchestra). This is an extraordinary collection of electronics which filled an entire room, adding to the song with a totally unique sonic palette – akin to a PVC pipe hit with a thong.

Standing the test of time

The contributions from the horn parts are also integral, played by Steve Madaio on trumpet and Trevor Lawrence on the tenor saxophone.

The horns first appear playing in unison with the bass line in the second half of the verse, emphasising the lift in energy. They play long notes in the chorus emphasising the melody, then reinforce the rhythmic figure at the crest of resolution.

Their part culminates in a powerful instrumental hook answering the vocal hook, “superstition ain’t the way”. These parts are repeated in the ensuing verses and choruses.

After the final chorus the horns cycle through a sequence containing the verse riff, the chorus hook and a short passage of long notes adapted from the chorus melody.

The melody of Superstition is very singable. Wonder’s delivery is fluid and highly expressive. He sings relatively short phrases, allowing the keyboard riffs to fill the space at the end of each phrase.

It isn’t until the chorus that Wonder delivers the first effortless vocal lick on “suffer”. His vocal delivery remains understated, with occasional punctuated phrases, gravel tones and a scream within the horn part.

The song ends with a long 50 second fade out, reinforcing the riff.

Superstition and Wonder’s vocal delivery is so dependable, groovy and secure musically. The listener feels free to give themselves over fully, to trust Wonder completely and lose themselves for a moment.

Superstition stands the test of time.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.
